Elm Tree Cottage could potentially consume large amounts of energy. We have therefore ensured our consumption is significantly minimized through the following measures:

Water is heated by 40 solar tubes on our South facing roof Solar Water Heating

Energy efficient boilers take a preheated feed from the 300ltr solar collecting tank which in the summer can reach temperatures of 75*C and averages 30*C during the winter.

All windows and doors are double glazed with Pilkington K glass which traps warmth on the inside.

Most walls are stone and over 2ft thick so we remain cool in the summer and retain warmth during the winter

Cavity walls and all floor voids are insulated which not only traps warmth but also minimises noise transference through floors.

Most light bulbs are low energy.

Washing and drying is done in large capacity energy efficient commercial machines. This has reduced our water consumption and reduced the number of loads compared to domestic machines.

Recycling

Plastic, glass, food cartons, paper and cardboard are recycled

All organic waste is composted and used to improve the soil in our vegetable and herb garden and crushed egg shells help to keep slugs and snails off tender plants. Compost Bin
